Unbalanced Glulam Beams
The most critical zone of a glulam bending member with respect to controlling strength is the outermost tension zone. In unbalanced beams, the quality of lumber used on the tension side of the beam is higher than the lumber used on the corresponding compression side, allowing a more efficient use of the timber resource. To assure proper installation of unbalanced beams, the top of the beam is clearly stamped with the word "TOP." Unbalanced beams are primarily intended for simple span applications.
Balanced Glulam Beams
These members are symmetrical in lumber quality about the mid-height. Balanced beams are used in applications such as cantilevers or continuous spans, where either the top or bottom of the member may be stressed in tension due to service loads. They can also be used in single span applications, although an unbalanced beam is more efficient for this use.
Species Characteristics
Douglas Fir (DF)
Douglas Fir, the predominant framing material in the west is dimensionally stable and universally recognized for its superior strength-to-weight ratio. Its high specific gravity provides excellent nail holding ability.

BigBeam - High Strength, I-Joist Compatible Rosboro
Rosboro BigBeam, a 30F high-strength hybrid glulam, is the strongest EWP beam in the industry and is the ideal beam for modern residential and commercial applications. BigBeam is made in popular I-Joist depths of 9-1/2", 11-7/8", 14", 16" and 18" and is sized to match framing widths of 3-1/2", 5-7/16" and 7". Because of its flush I-Joist depths, BigBeam is commonly used as a floor beam as well as window, door and garage door headers. Big Beam is also available in commercial depths of 20"-30".

Southern Yellow Pine (SYP) Southern Pine has long been the preferred species for pressure treatment because of its unique cellular structure that permits deep, uniform penetration of preservatives. Some 85% of all pressure-treated wood produced in the U.S. is Southern Pine.

Alaska Yellow Cedar (AYC) A tough, solid and very durable tree, Alaska Yellow Cedar is noted for its very slow growth and great longevity. Its natural oily extractives make it highly decay resistant and strongly aromatic when freshly cut. The wood of the Alaska Yellow Cedar is characterized by its distinctive and uniform yellow color. The narrow band of sapwood is very similar in color to the heartwood. The wood is fine in texture and has a straight grain. When green, the wood has a pungent sulfur odor. Yellow Cedar exhibits notable durability and longevity, being resistant to decay and insect attack.

Port Orford Cedar (POC) Rated strongest among all cedars, Port Orford Cedar (POC) has earned a reputation
for its strength and decay-resistance due to naturally occurring oils that help protect
against moisture and microorganisms. Port-Orford-cedar has been used for a wide
variety of things from the Hawaiian Presidential Palace to Japanese Buddhist
temples, California gold mine timbers and building construction. It was used for high
quality boats - Sir Thomas Lipton used this wood for his Shamrock series of 100'
racing sailboats, built as challengers for the Americas Cup just prior to World War 1.

Camber While any wood-bending member can be designed to minimize deflection, glulam is
the only engineered wood product that can be easily cambered to reduce the
aesthetic effect of in-service deflections. The glulam industry recommends that roof
beams be cambered for 1-1/2 times the calculated dead load deflection. This will
generally be sufficient to assure that the beam will not exhibit sag over a period of
many years of loading, as may occur with non-cambered wood products.
To achieve
a level profile it is recommended that floor beams be only cambered for 1.0 times
the calculated dead load deflection.
Most residential applications require very little or no camber which, in turn, makes
glulam the ideal choice. Rosboro's standard camber is 5000-foot radius, which is
nearly flat.
Curved Glulam Rosboro can manufacture many different curved shapes
up to 100 foot long. The Rosboro glulam sales team will
help you complete your curved beam specification.
Treated Glulam
- Species Coast Region Douglas Fir or Southern Yellow Pine
- Custom beams can be ordered with specified treatment
- Incising punctures the surface of the wood to assure deeper and more uniform penetration of preservative. Incising is recommended for all species except Southern Pine. Incising is not considered to have a detrimental effect on the strength of glulam. However, the effects of incising on appearance should be considered when treatments are specified.
Appearance Glulam appearance classifications and glulam strength characteristics are not related
to one another. Laminating lumber is selected for its strength attributes where
appearance is specified to satisfy the end use.
Framing Appearance This glulam is intended for concealed applications and is
available in widths designed to fit flush with standard wall
framing. The Framing Appearance standard allows for more
irregularities than either the Architectural or Industrial
Appearance standards.
- Two wide faces are "Hit and Miss" surfaced
- Low laminations, glueline squeeze-out and light wane are permitted
- Voids are not filled
Industrial Appearance This glulam is used in applications where appearance is not of
primary importance such as industrial buildings and warehouses.
- Voids on the edges of laminations are not filled
- Narrow faces of the beam are not surfaced
- Edges are not eased.
- Occasional misses, low laminations or light wane is permitted.
Architectural Appearance Architectural appearance is suitable for applications where glulam
is exposed in the finished structure such as; residences, office
buildings, restaurants and schools and other uses where finished
appearance is important but not the overriding consideration.
- Voids larger than ¾" are filled
- Low laminations are repaired
- All exposed faces are sanded
- Corners of the wide faces exposed to view are eased
Rosboro "Premium" Rosboro premium matches the industry standard for
premium appearance and should be specified for
applications when appearance is critical. The
finished glulam will still exhibit the natural visual
characteristics of lumber such as knots and
distorted grain.

Rosboro Design Software Rosboro KeyBeam software takes all of the guesswork out of specifying and using
glulam. This free software, created by Rosboro in association with Keymark of
Boulder, Colo., allows users to easily enter the span and load conditions for a given
project and automatically determine the best product for that application. Users can
also calculate multiple spans, point loads, cantilevers and other applications.
KeyBeam software is ideal for architects, designers and builders. It recognizes all
United States building codes and offers printable design calculations and beam
capacities.
Keybeam is free to current Rosboro customers, as well as designers and Specifier's
of Rosboro's engineered wood products.
