In the Northwest "Timber Basket", the Douglas fir reigns supreme. An amazing tree, the Doug fir is not only North America's most plentiful softwood species, accounting for one fifth of the continent's total softwood reserves, it is also a champion timber producer, yielding more timber than any other tree on the continent. But the Doug fir's best trait is its natural dimensional stability, making it the ideal choice for structural and general-purpose wood for framing lumber.

The physical properties of the Doug fir allow it to be useful for a variety of applications. Boasting a high modulus of elasticity (the highest of the North American softwood species), Doug fir resists deflection, making it perfect for the design of flooring and other systems. It also has the highest ratings of any Western softwood for extreme fiber stress in bending; for tension parallel-to-grain; for horizontal sheer; for compression perpendicular-to-grain; and for compression parallel-to-grain.

Finally, Doug fir is a beautiful wood that is tightly knotted and close-grained. Combining this aesthetic appeal with its structural capabilities makes it, for many, the standard against which all other framing lumber is judged.
